Butterfly class - ABOUT US (3-4s classroom)
At McMillan Nursery, we believe that every child is unique and deserving of a nurturing environment where they can grow, explore, and become independent, self-motivated learners. Our goal is to provide a supportive space where children feel secure, happy, and open to learning. We are a child-centred nursery that values each child’s individuality, recognizing their own areas of strength and growth.
Our Approach to Learning
We are committed to nurturing young children through real-life experiences and play-based learning. By following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, we support children’s development across the seven areas of learning. Our approach encourages curiosity, creativity, and the development of critical skills for lifelong learning.
Children at McMillan are encouraged to explore, discover, and learn at their own pace. We create an environment that fosters:
-
Independence and self-motivation
-
Confidence through meaningful, hands-on activities
-
Problem-solving and creative thinking
Building Strong Relationships
At McMillan, we understand that children learn best when they feel supported and safe. We focus on building strong relationships with each child and their family, ensuring that everyone feels part of our community. Our key focus areas include:
-
Social and emotional development: Helping children develop key skills in sharing, communication, and building positive relationships with their peers and our staff team.
-
Confidence in communication: Encouraging children to listen attentively, express themselves clearly, and engage confidently with adults and peers.
-
Collaboration and cooperation: Children learn to work together, share, and solve problems as a group, enhancing their social skills.
Personalised Learning
We recognise that every child is unique and may need different levels of support to grow and achieve. By looking at each child’s starting points, we ensure that their individual needs are met, guiding them through their learning journey. Our aim is to help every child:
-
Develop their strengths and overcome challenges
-
Reach their full potential through positive and supportive interactions
A Partnership with Families
We believe that a strong partnership with families is crucial for a child’s success. At McMillan, we work closely with parents and caregivers to support children through any difficulties or challenges that may arise. Our team is always here to provide guidance, share insights, and ensure that each child receives the best possible care and support.
Play-Based Learning
We truly believe that play is the work of the child. Through play, children develop key skills, gain new knowledge, and make meaningful connections with the world around them. At McMillan, your child will:
-
Engage in practical, hands-on learning
-
Develop their knowledge and skills through creative and imaginative activities
-
Build friendships and learn to cooperate in a fun and supportive environment
Our Vision for Every Child

We nurture a love for learning and aim to instil in every child the confidence to grow, explore, and achieve. At McMillan, we value children as individuals with their own needs and interests, and we are dedicated to helping them develop in all areas of life — academically, socially, and emotionally.
